I DON'T KNOW

Well that was my answer to a dozen questions yesterday, but today I can say I know something. . . We got our preliminary hearing date set, March 26!  Serendipitous?  I think so, it's Dave's birthday!

What this means -

The Ethiopian court has our daughter's case scheduled for review.  Which means we are officially on the docket, and not just officially waiting to be on the docket.  It feels very official now.  Remember, we do not travel for the preliminary hearing.  I believe it's purpose is to determine if all the paperwork for our daughter is valid and that she is adoption ready, legally.  We have the director of the program in Ethiopia as our 'power of attorney' who will be there on our behalf.  Just in case you were wondering, cause I get asked that quite a bit.

What happens next -

After the hearing, MOWA (Ministry of Women's Affairs) will then submit their letter of recommendation to the court. . . and THEN we will get our Final court date.

Yes, this means more waiting.  It always means more waiting, if you haven't figured that out yet.  ;)  We don't have a guesstimate on when our travel will happen.  It just depends on when they can fit us in after they get the letter, which usually takes a couple weeks.  Nothing works quickly.  I can't guess time wise cause then I get hounded by people and I've learned my lesson about that one.

What happens after that -

The Final court date will be when the Ethiopian court stamps us with approval and finalizes the adoption, which is why we need to be there. . . but we won't be able to bring her home until the US Embassy grants approval of the case.  That takes a couple of months, because even the US is extremely slow and obsessed with paperwork.  That will be our second and final trip to Ethiopia, at least for awhile.  ;)

Sorry if you've read this all before, but I get asked the same questions over and over again by the same people even, so I assume everyone needs a review.  I realize it's easier for me to remember the process because I'm living it and every one else is only partially listening when I explain all this crazy/confusing stuff just waiting for me to get to the good part of the 'Gotcha Day'.  ;)  You'll have to wait with me on that one.

Even Dave needs the reminder. . . I texted him the PH date and he immediately told everyone at work that we were going to Africa.  Doh, head slap.  He was too excited, but thankfully corrected that announcement and will not being making any more.  ;)

like a little seed

So the lesson I'm doing this month in YW is on Faith.  I kept it simple this time and just made a pic (above, obviously, I don't know why I felt I needed to add this note) which I'll have printed at Costco cause I heart Costco and cause I have to heart Costco cause hubby works there.  ;)  Feel free to use the pic, and/or Costco, though I get no kickback if you do.

You may be wondering why I didn't go with the classic seed theme for a Faith lesson. . . well I'm not good with plants.  Black thumb, fingers, fingernails. . . you name it.  Though if I was going to do a seed handout I think I'd go this route. . .

But maybe a Faith lesson shouldn't have a sense of humor.  ;)  We shall see.

OK, I thought about it and decided I would like a little humor so I made them.  I downloaded it from spoonful.com which you can get to from clicking on the pic above. . . but I wanted to fit more than one on a page, so I shrunk it a tad and added a quote to the back panel because it had nothing there originally.

Wishing you a very peaceful Sunday.  Thanks for checking on me, I'm still here.  ;)

99 pictures taken with new Sony camera

. . . are you waiting for my decision on the camera?  Well, here it is anyway.

The positive. . .
  • good sharp focus in GOOD lighting conditions
  • good color
  • perfectly tiny size to fit in my pocket
  • got it on sale at Target at great price
  • very simple, no stupid menus to dig through
  • No extra card needed, big internal memory, holds 800 pics
  • So far the battery life is top notch

The not-so-positive. . .
  • slow focusing sometimes
  • not great in less than ideal lighting
  • didn't get the color of camera I wanted, but hey it was on sale and I'll survive
  • basic shooting, no way to change settings
  • the camera picks what scene you need
  • the delete photos menu is separate from the review photos, which is just weird to me
So it's a toss up.  I think I may keep it anyway.  It'll take great landscape shots in Africa I bet.  And I must say it captured our life pretty accurately in the picture below. . .

Dave annoyed with my camera pointed at him. . . again, and child, a blur of motion.  Welcome to the family Sony S01.

28 minutes it took me to finally get this post completed

art appreciation

I'm melting, or The evolution of a baby butterfly.  I'm pretty sure she knows where butterflies come from, so this may have deeper meaning.

This next piece is a Family Portrait.  All I know is that the top row of people from left to right are Dave, Miley, and I.  The name at the top is Kari's.  I think she was going to write everyone's name but, was running out of room and steam after three names.  So since she left it wide open, you can claim yourself as any of the people pictured.

I've noticed that she has stopped drawing legs on her people, or clothes.  Apparently we do not need either one, however, fingers and feet are necessary.

This one is titled Come and Play, and it depicts a lion with a giraffe and monkey head floating behind it.  I don't know if the lion ate them or not, but that is my guess.

your thoughts

I want to make a new piece of art for Miley's bathroom, which is also the bathroom that guests use when they visit.  Unfortunate, but necessary sharing of the space.

I can't make up my mind, so I'm putting them here for your perusal and maybe some input. . .???

So here are some images, please note that my design will not be the same as those pictured, but I added them here because I liked the wordage/quotes used. . . that part, I will copy. . .

Now you may be thinking. . . why are you putting a quote on her wall instead of picture of some sort. Well, one; she's reading now, not extensively but on her way so it's not that much of a stretch.  ;)  And two, I like words and I like words that will remind my girlies to think well of themselves.  OK, the house elves one does not fit into that category, and maybe not at all, but I just thought it was funny.  Over her head, yep, but funny.

I guess if you think using a quote is ill advised I could always go this route. . . or something similar. . .
. . . but it will hang in a bathroom and I just don't think cutesy food will be appetizing there.  ;)

That's why the sayings are my best option, unless you can think of something else.  I could hang the Mona Lisa in there, but it doesn't really match.  Too dark, no red or pink anywhere.  I guess I could add lipstick.  ;)

A different saying perhaps. . . ???  Seriously I need someone to sway my vote here.

On another subject, if you remember my desire to add a unicorn to Dave's nook, well I found another design option for him to consider.  He hasn't let me at his nook yet.  Here's hoping he'll forget about it soon and I'll be able to paint this piece of awesomeness on it.

Thanks in advance for the abundance of advice and input I'm sure I'll receive after you read this. . . ;)

whatcha doing?

Listening. . . Everything about You from Notting Hill Soundtrack.  Girlie chill music playlist.  And Miley's new cough.  Lovely.

Eating. . . Fruit snack, courtesy of Miley

Reading. . . Tax documents, my head hurts.  Just finished a book called Divergent. . . ehhh.

Drinking. . . Nothing, I'm in my office and Miley would probably find a way to spill it on my computer, though a vanilla Coke sounds really good right now for the headache.

Wanting. . . I guess I should have saved my last answer for this one.

Needing. . . Another vacation.  D had to use a week of vacation recently before we lost it in February, like January recently.  We went nowhere, did nothing much. . . it was AWESOME!

Watching. . . My tax refund click up way too slowly.  Grateful it is in the green, but thinking how we're supposed to make it so we break even, ideally.

Working. . . On this blog post, obviously.  A canvas for the hallway, the backyard chalkboard if the weather normalizes, my patience, photo editing for most of 2012, reading with Miley.  Saying no to people who ask me to do stuff.  ;)  Of course I'm kidding, I have no problem saying no.

Feeling. . . RELIEF, to be done with taxes, my lesson, preschool volunteer day, New Beginnings preparations, Valentines stuff, D's store inventory.

Thinking. . . My hubby owes me big time for doing taxes every year.  I now understand my Mom's 'episode' one Christmas when she yelled at my sick/coughing sister (on video for us to enjoy over and over).  I want to tell my kid to go cough somewhere else as well.  ;)  I think that 'Morgan' kid I talked about previously is in fact just a punk, after spending a day at Miley's school.  He said he wanted to choke me.  Wow.  I told Miley to stay away from the psycho.  I think this post shows that I spend too much time thinking, when the reading section could use a another sentence or two.  ;)

Enjoying. . . Miley's excitement for the old camera (old red Sony, not new red Sony, it was returned) I just gave her to use. . . and abuse, most likely.  The flash is probably damaging my eyesight though, and the dogs'.  ;)  And NOT so much enjoying the flaky weather lately. . .

We went from this one day. . .

To this. . . the very next day. . .

But of course we still did the same things out in the falling nasty white stuff. . .

Felt like I was back in Idaho.  ;)  Forecast looks brighter through this week.  I'm sure you were concerned about us thin-blooded folk here.

occurring to me now

So I just had a thought and figured I may need to apologize a little. . . I just realized that I may be criticizing cameras (in my reviews) that are owned by some of you, maybe even dearly loved or recommended.  I'm sorry for being harsh.  I am extremely picky and they just didn't meet my needs as an extremely picky or nit-picky camera person.  It's me, not your camera.  Friends again?  ;)

I just joined a group on Facebook for Ethiopian adoptive families (specifically using our agency). . . and it turns out most of the other families live in the southern states back east.  We are the lone active family out here, which is weird considering their office is located here as well.

Another thing I found out adoption-wise. . . Whenever I mention that we are adopting, which I've learned to do infrequently, people always tell me about other people they know that couldn't have kids or they ask questions about what we did to try to get pregnant.  Seriously, people are weird.  It's just an assumption that we couldn't have kids.  A given.  I didn't think twice about it cause we get it A LOT.  Our new southern friends have it differently.  In their culture/churches it is encouraged that they adopt if they can and are willing. . . even with a full house of genetically similar offspring.  It's normal to add to their family that way.  Consider my mind blown.  Not that I don't think adoption is normal, it's the going without all the fertility advice every time adoption is mentioned that seems like a refreshing piece of heaven.  Considering a move.  ;)  I think I could pull off an accent.

I am a cry baby.  Who knew.  Oh right, all my YW and my husband and kid.  I'm sure that's it.  ;)  I was looking at the new pictures of Jovey on my phone with Miley right beside me. . . she leans forward to look at my face very seriously.  I said, 'what' and she replied, 'just checking to see if you were happy crying.'  Oh geez.  (I wasn't btw).  I can't help it.  I think it's getting worse, that's my freaky realization.  I used to be able to help it, or so my memory insists, but now I'm a big wet mess.  I'm planning my church lesson and bawling through it.  Why?  Cause I'm a baby, and I drink too much fluid, and it's easier than getting up to pee.  ;) My mom hates it when we say pee.  Sorry Mom.  It aggravates Dave when I spit in the face of science and say things that are obviously not true. . . yes I know, you can't cry instead of pee.  Sorry again Mom.  ;)

I am a mother of two girls, but only get to hold and cuddle one of them presently.  The agency always refers to her as YOUR daughter, and that makes me cry. . .  I think my defense mechanism has been preparing me to only think YOUR when I get to bring her home.  Didn't work, now YOUR is real to me.

I was looking into how to fix my post title font and found that I didn't want to hassle with the html anymore (so it will remain plain and boring for awhile) . . . and instead found the widget to add the 'you might also be interested in' feature at the bottom of the posts.  I've been going back through my blog posts of last year as I do our scrapbook, so I don't forget to add anything.  It's been fun and I thought I'd like to go further back, but the archives are not fun to wade through.  Thus the widget. . . and now I've found that it is a huge time suck.  I can't get off the blog after I post for foooooorever cause I might be interested in. . . every post, especially little Miley pictures and stories.  Oh and now I need to add pictures to every post or it will just show up at the bottom with only my  ~m.  Lame.  Sorry if the quicksand finds you as well.  Well not really, I'm trying to keep you prisoner in my life via the blog.

So an idea I had back in 2010 is finally on my docket.  I didn't realize my project list was so backlogged.  I guess I can't be frustrated with the Ethiopian courts for taking their time since I suffer from the same problem.  No wait, I can.  ;)  So now that it's on the list and the supplies have been purchased, we'll see if it gets accomplished.  If I was a betting person, I'd say. . . maybe.  I don't like having stuff around, and right now there is a can of paint in my laundry room.  Maybe this project will see the light.  Do you hate it when I talk about stuff and never actually give you any real details.  It's my way.  OK, it's the project where I paint a chalkboard on my backyard fence/wall.  I feel weird calling it a fence since fence makes me think of wood or that plastic weird stuff they use.  My fence is a wall.  Good walls make good neighbors around here.  Well, I don't know my neighbors actually.  They've moved in and out too much.  We quit keeping up with all that.  I know, where is my trophy for neighbor of the year?

Miley just walked in and told me her shirt popped off.  Yep, popped off on it's own.  Who knows.  She must be a nutter.

I feel very un-invested in things right now.  I don't actually know if that is a word, but that hasn't stopped me before so we're going with it.  Like for instance, I don't feel like going to YW activities lately or doing much of anything with New Beginnings.  I was asked to do another invitation for an event and I just did it fast and wasn't compelled to do more. . . which is totally not like me.  I think I pinpointed why I am detached from stuff now. . . it's the adoption.  I am waiting and can't find the focus for other things.  None of the rest matters.  I need to be waiting.  Not that I'm not doing anything or living with the living.  I just have this weird mindset that keeps me from investing in anything other than Jovey and that process.  It's so weird cause the waiting doesn't require my help or even my attention, but it has it nonetheless.  Miley has had a couple of dreams about zombies lately, maybe she's getting it from me.  ;)  Don't worry, she wasn't traumatized, just told me matter-of-factly about them.  No, I did not let her watch ParaNorman.  Even though she begged me to.  ;)

I got an idea for Halloween costumes this year.  I haven't run it past Davey yet, but I'm sure he'll be happy with it.  Miley was convinced of it today, but it's only February so I probably shouldn't get too attached to the idea.  Yep, leaving you in the dark, but it will be dark.  Consider that your hint. . . a really crappy one.  ;)  It's only February, but not having a plan makes me twitchy.

Read some of Dave's text conversations recently. . . he is not funny.  Don't be fooled, he may sound funny.  This is how he does it.  He reads me a text he receives, I make a comment about it, and then he types that comment in reply.  I didn't realize he was doing that until now.  What a punk.  I thought he learned about plagiarism in college.  By the way, if you find his responses not funny, then those are from him, all him, of course.  ;)  Panda out.  ;)

I'm allergic to problems.  They get under my skin and I have to fix them, which is why I make a horrible listener for someone who just wants to vent.  I thought I was a good listener too.  Dave pointed out otherwise this week when he was telling me about his managing woes.  I asked if he had tried x, y, and z.  He stared me down and told me I didn't have to fix it.  Oh crap, was I doing that?  I hate when he does that to me.  Oh crap again.  Hello hypocrit, and now I have to apologize and never complain about him wearing a 'fix it hat'.  Stupid foot welcome to mouth, make yourself at home.

I'm thinking some of these things that have occurred to me this week, have probably done so before and probably appear in previous posts. . . Does that mean that my memory is on the decline, or the bright side, that every day is full of surprises from here on out?  Hmmmmm, my self examination is suspect.

I bought another camera.  The itty bitty Nikon Coolpix S01.  Here are some pics. . . so the post isn't all type.  I haven't had time to judge this camera yet.

February lessons

We've got all new lessons for the youth this year in church and so I thought maybe I'd start adding my handouts to the blog again.  I got lazy about it before.  This is the handout I made for the February lessons of pre-mortal life or the one about choices.  I'm kinda combining those two lessons myself, but I think it would work for either on it's own as well.

So while planning my lesson I kept thinking about those stupid folded paper games where you choose from the outside and then move it back and forth and then choose something from the inside and . . . until you open it up and read your, I don't know, future.  I think they were called 'cootie catchers', but I really don't remember.  They were cheesy and yet oh so fun when I was a kid.  I kept thinking that it would be perfect as something new and different to handout. . . and it had to do with choices.

So I made my own.  I wanted it to remind the girls of who they are and where they came from.  The big choice they made to be here in this life.  And how to make choices that will lead them back.  I used scriptures for the inside and some quotes I liked for the final reveal.

I was so tired of making bookmarks and magnets.  After folding all of these I may be happy to go back to them however. ;)

Here it is if you would like to use it or make one for yourself.  I included a link to download it or just drag and drop the picture.  It is a jpg.  Oh and the instructions for folding it are on there as well.

Sony Cybershot WX150

So it was inevitable. . .

Dave is the indefatigable optimist and thinks he will find a point and shoot camera that I will like.  Not love.  Like.  However, he is wrong.  I would like him to be right just this once.  I could use a little camera to take to Africa.  I don't think my phone will cut it quality-wise.

Well the little red was cute, but the biggest issue I had with it was the focus.  It was too soft for my taste.

It had some features that wouldn't be used so much like, the panorama. . . and the painterly effects which Dave thought were pretty cool.

These are all SOOC, except the dancing clip further down, which I photoshopped some color into.

Miley got tired of my camera testing.  ;)

The flash is intense, but this is typical of pretty much all point and shoot cameras.

 Without the flash, blur happens.

It has a pet mode.  I don't know why or how it differs from other modes.  Nilla wasn't impressed either.

With a 10fps continuous mode I was able to capture this piece of modern dance.  But break it up into individual shots and it's super blurry.  Granted, the lighting in my office is not ideal, but most photos are not lit professionally so I consider this a good test for a camera.

This is Dave's response to my camera review/issues.  ;)
