Kindergartner!

Jovey has been waiting for Kindergarten to start, since preschool ended.  She was so excited to go to school!  She had her outfit picked out and sitting on her chair for over a week in anticipation.

This pink shirt outfit was not the special pick.  On Monday she had a part day where the parents go with her and check out her classroom and fill out paperwork and talk to the teacher.  She did not count this as her first day of school.  Even though we had already had back to school night previously.  So, she couldn't wear her school outfit, but she still wanted pictures taken.  I mean, she'd probably request them everyday if she knew I would be up for that.  ;)

I don't know what's with her foot popping pose.  I asked her about it afterward and she just shrugged.

First day of school!  The outfit she picked the hair she wanted.  Everything worked out fine.  Oh, and she got the teacher she wanted and the time I wanted!  Yay for Kindergarten!

Jovey said, her real first day wouldn't include so many adults, well except her teacher.  She was happy to be rid of us that morning.  Miley proudly walked her to her playground had a little chat with Jo's teacher and neither of them even looked back.

Kindergarten is a winner in Jovey's book.  She even gets to go to library, which she couldn't stop raving about.  ;)

I asked her if she missed me, and she said nope, but then she wanted to cuddle with me and watch a cartoon, so maybe that answer wasn't completely honest.  ;)

Love my independent girlies.

Things

This morning the girls were arguing over what to do with me after I died.  Yep.  They couldn't agree.  They rock/paper/scissored to a conclusion.  Jovey won.  My bones will be made into a skeleton for her Halloween decorations.  Are you curious what Miley wanted to do with me?  ;) She wanted my ashes to carry around with her wherever she went.  I feel so loved.  ;)  Miley's consolation prize, she'll get to keep Dad that way.  I didn't mention that she could probably still have her plan for me too, because I was eating breakfast and the whole thing was starting to creep me out.  ;)

Jovey regularly tells me that she's the funniest one in the family.  Which is just a slap in the face to me, cause Dave is not funny and Miley is funny purely by accident. . . . so. . . What a turd.  I have competition.  Oh well.  She could be right.  She says some funny stuff and I wish I was better at remembering or writing it down.

Here's one little anecdote for ya. . . Jovey farted, which isn't funny (at least to me), but then she said, 'go toots and be free.'  I'm really winning on making her into a lady.

Dave and I were watching a Kevin James stand up show.  I'm not a laugh out loud person usually, so I am horrible company for these kind of programs.  Dave, however, laughs at everything, which makes me unsure of his reliability.  How can I judge my cleverness against his generousness?  huh.  Maybe Jovey is right.  Boo.  Ok, James Corden, he is funny.  He can make me laugh.  And Jovey.  Dang it, she does win.

My aloe plant has gone on to a better place.  The backyard.  As in planted not buried, but I guess planting does require a bit of that too.  It was too huge for the little cubby in my library.  Now the space in the library is sitting sadly with a tiny new plant of the cacti variety.  I need a plant that won't grow so fast or at least not so big, but big enough to fill the space.  Ugh.  Oh and it can't be fragile cause I just can't handle anything like that.  We'll see if this one fits the bill.  Who knew I would have living things in my house one day.  I never foresaw this.

All our plants are in bloom outside.  Everything is looking so lovely.  The honeysuckle smells awesome and my three colors of roses came up so well.  Jovey has eaten strawberries and tomatoes from our very own plants.  Miley lost her chance to some pesky birds, and she doesn't like tomatoes for some crazy reason.  I'll be getting a net soon to cover the strawberry plants, the pinwheels aren't deterrent enough it seems.

(planting time)

We planted tons of things and probably overfilled our garden.  We're learning here.  Anyway, it's been fun to watch them grow.  Less fun to watch some of them die, but thus is the circle of life.  We have broccoli, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, strawberries, peas, raspberries, and pumpkins.  The peas are from Miley's science fair experiment.  They were a last minute addition and so far seem to be alive.  We're hoping the ones she watered with root beer will taste that way if they bear fruit.  ;)

Miley had fun all day at the college for the District science fair.  She was disappointed she didn't win, but it was a BIG event.  So many kids.  Next year, if I am crazy enough to let her do it again we'll do a flashier project.

My shoulder still hurts.  Were you waiting for a shoulder update?  Yeah, probably not, but this is my life and you will listen to it.  ;) Or scroll away, to each their own.  I'm probably at a 70% function now.  I can finally put my hair in a bun all by myself.  Dave's been a trooper all these months.  I cannot however, make a cactus pose.  I can't rotate out yet, unless someone is forcing my arm to do it and then, OWWWW.  It has to be done.  I am so over the constant nagging pain.  Nerves and also scar tissue breaking up.  It's driving me to distraction.  Seriously, DO NOT hurt your shoulders.

So two years ago I painted my whole house.  It needed a facelift so all walls/baseboards/ceilings that were the original white were re-painted a new and better white.  This included my bedroom and since we thought maybe we'd redo the walls as well, I did no taping and left the edges all sorts of beautiful.  Well multiple samples around the room and nothing clicking left our room looking sad and me feeling sad.  I don't know when I officially gave up on my room, but it happened and then I no longer noticed it looked so bad.  Then came the remodel and I liked the color of paint I found for my office so I painted my bathroom that color and maybe brought it out into my bedroom some as well.  So more of a mess.  TWO years, that is just my guess.  I am afraid it may be actually 3.  No no way.  ;)  Anyway, so this weekend Dave helped me finish it.  I can't reach up high so well yet, but I am a decent left handed painter.  I think this may be the very first room Dave has painted in this house since we moved in 13 years ago.  And probably his last.  ;)  But yay it's done, finally.

Is it weird that my room feels strange being all one color.  ;)

We got rid of our love seat from the living room.  I bought two chairs.  I love the chairs, but I really miss that couch.  It was the comfiest couch ever.  I just needed a change.  We bought those couches when we moved into this house.  Sooooo long ago.  They are still awesome, but will be awesome in a new home.  Well eventually, the couch is still here, waiting to be replaced.  It is hard to find a good replacement for a beloved piece of furniture.  I mean I love it, but don't love the look of it.  Never did, but I couldn't argue with how good it was at the time.  Dave may have shed some tears and made me take a picture of him on the love seat before it left the premises.  It's on his phone so he can look at it and reminisce, otherwise I would have shared it here too. ;)

Jovey passed preschool.  Whew.  ;)  She is super ready for kindergarten.  I am super ready for school to be done.

Utah!

Fourth grade program time.  All about Utah!  I added some of the song videos and, of course, Miley's favorite the dance.  Enjoy a little performance from the cheap seats with us. . .

(So excited to start dancing, lead couple ;)

Are you wondering if she danced with her crush. . . well no she did not, but they are friends (which I guess is anyone Miley talks to so that's an easy classification to fit into).

Are you now wondering which one is her crush. . . I'll give you a hint: He's wearing a red bandana.  Narrows it down quite a bit.  Ha ;)

He gave her lots of sweets for Valentines and I tried not to roll my eyes right out of my head about it all.  ;)

OK, I was just informed by Miss Mie that her dance partner only wanted to dance with her, so maybe crushes are a changing.  Fickle fourth grade hearts.  ;)

School pictures

The second most traumatic day at school. . . picture day.  Something about smiling naturally just freaks my kids out.  OK, I don't like it either.  Maybe I make this day tense.  They practiced beforehand and. . .

Not too bad this year. . .

Are you wondering what the most traumatic day of school is. . . well that would be the very last day, when my kids bawl their eyes out cause they'll miss school.  Oy.

School Daysssss

It has begun.  Another year of homework and papers, reading logs and art projects.  My kids are not disappointed about this change in season.  I would have loved to have summer go longer, but I'm dealing with the change.

The fourth grader. . .

She had her mouth open for a lot of pictures until I made her close it.  Finally.
Miley said her teacher is the best teacher ever, she says that every year, but it is always true for my positive girl.

 The Preschooler. . .

Had to do jumping pictures because her sister always does them.  Woke up extra early and talked her sister into getting into bed with her to chat until the alarm went off.  Soooo excited.  When her teacher FINALLY opened her classroom door she turned around to stick her tongue out at me and then smiled so big and ran inside.  Peace out mama.  No hug.  Nothing.  ;)

My independent girlies make these changes so much easier on my heart.  I know they've got this handled.

Meanwhile, I have a lot of hair to do every morning now. . . and Miley documented the torture nicely. . . ;)

Miley's homework

This was the video we made for Miley's book report.  Just thought I'd share it. . .

I took notes

I have been filling out a five year journal, well for the past five years.  One of the days in February the prompt asks about the weather.  So freaky thing is that our weather alternates each year, exactly.  First year, 64º, next 48º, then 64º, you guessed it 48º, and this year is was once again 64º.  I'm not sure about this climate change thing.  ;)  Seems pretty regular to me.  FREAKY.

I bought wallpaper for Jovey's new bedroom.  Insert big eyed😳 . . . hey look you can put emojis in blog posts.  I didn't know that.  Whaat?  Ok, anyway, I love the look and idea of 3D wallpaper.  You know the textured stuff, that's also paintable.  Whaaat again?  So awesome.  I found some that is the same flower as the fabric I bought and centered Jovey's current room around.  Fortuitous, yes.  A sign, probably that I had to buy it.  Now to figure out how to do freaking wallpaper.  Not the whole room, ugh, just a small wall behind her bed. . . that I am endeavoring to build.  This whole house construction thing is making me believe I can do all this.  We'll see how right it is.

Miley tells people our house is under destruction.  Bahahaha.  She didn't understand my laughter when I heard her say that.  She's right though, it feels the same.

When we were watching the Superbowl, Miley kept cheering, Go Falco!  It made me really want to watch The Replacements again.  I finally corrected her at the end, before she went to school the next day and said it to real people.  I hate correcting her funny-ness.  I don't know if she'll ever grow out of it and I am soooo hoping she doesn't, at least for my amusement.

Miley has lost three teeth in a week.  She pulled out two of them herself.  Her dentist said she had 9 year old teeth.  Somehow you can tell from an x-ray of teeth how old you are.  Yeah, well wrongo.  Miley just has mature teeth I guess.

Miley gave Jo the job of babysitting her stuffed dog, Duke, one day while she was at school.  Jo took this very seriously and was all sorts of annoying about it.  Mom, shush Duke is taking a nap in here.  Mom, I need another snack for Duke.  etc.  ;)  And then Jo got distracted by the TV and set Duke down and couldn't remember where.  Drama queen Jovey took over from there.  Crying and freaking out that he was lost FOREVER.  Eye roll.  Thanks Miley.  ;)  Once she did find him, sitting on a chair in the living room she was still so upset that she let Miley down and that Miley would never trust her again that she put herself down for a nap.  Oh my stars.  I agreed with that decision.  The drama is strong with my girls.  I blame Dave.

So Dave dropped a 2x4 on my right foot last week.  My toe is purple and black and I can't bend it anymore.  I take partial blame, because I was working in flip flops at the time.  Yeah, I am no good at wearing reasonable shoes.

This week I ripped the toenail mostly off on my left big toe, while moving doors.  This one was all me, once again working in flip flops.  I am not wise.  ;)  Though, I work in flip flops all the time and to just have two accidents isn't too bad of a record.  ;)  I can't walk anymore.  I am tapping out of the construction business until I heal. . . which won't ever happen because I live with the two worst foot stepping girlies on the planet.  My feet aren't even that big, how can they always find them to step on them??!!

Valentine school party next week here is my plan:
Last one of the year!!!!  Being room mom during all this other stuff we have going on was exhausting.  But we made it, and I think it was successful.

Jovey got to teach her class about Ethiopia today. . . she was so excited! I told her to teach them the shoulder dance.  Her teacher sent me these pics.  I wish I could have been there in person, but I saw her practice her presentation enough times I have a good idea of how it went.  ;)

Ok, construction workers need my input.  More questions.  I'm out.

Miley the teacher

Last month Miley taught her class.  She insisted that Jovey and I be there to witness it.

So I recorded it. . .

You are welcome.  ;)

The art of the perfect smile

When Miley has to smile without actually feeling the feels to smile, well you can tell.  Let's call it like it is. . . Chandler.  ;)  Her real smile is beautiful and yet she's in a phase where she can't do it on purpose.  I'm hoping it's a phase.  This is a new problem so we're definitely going with phase here.

So we practice before school photos/family photos. . . practice makes perfect.  I usually have to make her laugh for it to work, but since I'm not the school photog and I don't believe they have eyes or personality, at least from the work they've sent home to us these past four years, I tried to get Miley to do it on her own, smile that is.

But alas, the evil school photog did it again. . .

We have her fake smile recorded for history.  ;)  And the focal length is off for the photo cause it made her face wider.  Which I shouldn't have pointed out to you cause now I've ruined it haven't I?

We call this CHEESE.  And now we will always remember her cheese face.  It's a cute one anyway.  We love our cheese ball.

But why didn't they move her hair off her shoulder?  Come on.

all grown up and nowhere to go

Preschool has officially taken my baby.  She's thrilled.  She has been waiting oh-so-patiently for this to happen.  I told her it would start 'next week', and every day after that she asked me, 'is it next week?'  'Is today next week?'  Yes, yes it is.

Jovey told me that she'd probably be different at school.  I don't know what that means.  I do know that she is very serious about her schooling.  She is very calm and serious when she talks about it.  That is not so much how she is at home, so I guess she was right about being different.

After her first day I asked her if she missed me.  She said, 'no I did not.  I was brave the whole time.'  Hmmmm.  I guess that's good.  After the second day, she said she missed me a little.  That's more like it.  ;)

We went to get Jovey a backpack.  I showed her a few and had one in particular that I wanted her to pick.  She kinda wanted the purple stripe with the heart, but she could tell that I wanted her to pick another one so she did.  She's such a sweetheart.  I told her it was OK to pick whichever one SHE really wanted and finally she told me it was this one.

*A thing about backpacks. . . so Downeast Home sells Potterybarn stuff, including their backpacks, but they usually have names or initials embroidered on them.  They are really good backpacks, and a really good price.  So, years ago we saw one there for Miley and I took off the name and let Miley pick out a patch to put there instead.  The patch has since been replaced with crocheted flowers, but the backpack is still in fantastic shape, much to her dismay.  She'd really like a new one, just to get a new one.  I'm thinking this one can survive until the end of elementary school.  For Jovey's backpack I found this glitter iron-on sheet that you can cut into whatever you want, and since it matched the heart already on her bag it was perfect.

Jovey told me to cuddle this doll while she was at school if I was missing her.  Check.

We live in flip flops, and I didn't realize that Jovey had grown out of all of her sandals/shoes over the summer.  Yeah, that was good planning on my part.  So I had to search for sandals for her to wear to school, meanwhile we took pics barefoot.

Jovey eats lunch at school.  She told me she got milk for lunch.  It's weird for her, cause she's not a big fan of milk usually.  I asked her why she didn't get chocolate milk, cause that's her favorite and I know they get a choice.  She told me that plain milk was healthier so she chose to be healthy.  She learned that one from Miley.

I asked Jovey is she made any friends yet and she said, 'no, not today, maybe tomorrow.'  I also asked her if everyone touched her hair.  Shocker, yes yes they did.

She was super excited to take her own first day of school pics, and have Daddy drop her off at school.   She asked me if she gets to go back next week too.  She's living the dream.
